Don’t-Miss Tips on To-Do Lists

As an ADD Coach, I talk about to-do lists a lot. I know the concept makes some people cringe, but when you really learn how to work with them, in a way that works for you, I can guarantee that your outlook will change.  Try this out and let me know what you think. Start with really small lists. Put 2-3 items on your list each day, no more. Chose items that will take no longer than 20 minutes to accomplish. If you have a big project to complete, don’t write that down. Instead, write down a task from that big project that will take about 20 minutes. I like using the 3.5 x 5.5 tablets available at office supply stores. A fun pen with your favorite colored ink dedicated to list-making is nice too. And remember, lists can be made up of positive things to do, not just the things you loathe.

Really, multi-task – me?

Multi-tasking is the hip and cool thing to do these days – but for someone with ADD? Rethink that one. I’m talking about the physical kind of multi-tasking, like cutting a watermelon while reading the paper kind of multi-tasking. Physical multi-tasking, or having lots of things to do simultaneously, can get downright dangerous. Don’t you dare ask me to pick up your dry cleaning when I’m pouring cereal. Fleeing the Land of Resistance

I stood in my little beachside bungalow kitchen this morning, second cup of coffee in hand, slant sunshine spilling through the slats of the opened window, as the sensation that a puddle of thick, black tar had begun encircling my feet. This wasn’t a physical sensation, but rather a purely mental one. I feared that hours would tick by as I stood frozen like a mammoth at the La Brea Tar Pits while my kitchen morphed into that place that so many of my ADD clients know all too well, the place I call The Land of Resistance. My mug of coffee grew lukewarm as I stood there with the sunshine warming my pajama sleeve. I wasn’t budging, not the slightest move; I was most definitely there. Over time, an ADDer comes to recognize this place more readily. For those of you who are sick and tired of being swept into this nasty place and suffering from its ugly consequences, such as missing deadlines, not completing assignments, or tripping over mounds of dirty laundry on the floor, I bring good news: there is a way out.
